The women’s doubles event saw the British pair of Jocelyn Rae & Anna Smith capture their fourth doubles title of 2014, having already won two at $25k level, and one at £10k level.
Whilst Rae & Smith are rapidly becoming a formidable pair, their opponents in Friday’s final Magda Linette & Amra Sadikovic, were playing together for the first time. This certainly didn’t show when the Polish/Swiss pairing impressively won the opening set 6-3, only to see the British pair race to a 5-1 lead in the second. It looked like the match was on its way to a match tie-break, but this was to underestimate the resolve of the rookie pair who won four games in a row to get back to 5-5. Rae & Smith used their doubles experience to weather the storm, taking the next two games, and then dominate the match tie-break for a 3-6, 7-5, 10-4 victory. After the match the pair said: “We’re obviously delighted to win our fourth title of the year, especially when the draw was so strong here at Edgbaston. We are next off to play in Japan, and looking to build on our good start to 2014.” After the match the 2014 doubles champions spent time with pupils from Broadway School who had come to the tennis as part of the “Beyond the Baseline” project which has been set up in Birmingham, to help develop youth participation in the City. - See more at: http://www.lta.org.uk/fans-major-events/AEGON-GB-Pro-Series/News/20141/Edgbaston/Rae--Smith-win-Aegon-GB-Pro-Series-Edgbaston-doubles-title/#sthash.VS9y6dSi.dpuf
