Report:
This year there was a different feel to Eastbourne. Devonshire park was going through renovation, improving facilities for the WTA/ATP tournament. This meant fewer courts, resulting in a scaled-down format and for Nottinghamshire two new players to the team. Anthony, representing Nottinghamshire for the first time since his junior days, and John, his first ever call up to a County Team were two of the proudest players at the venue.
Despite the reduced format the quality of players across the event was the strongest I have known, including our own group of teams. To enjoy the pristine courts, the venue and the atmosphere was the goal of the week, followed by survival. I am pleased to say we certainly achieved the first and was one point away from achieving the second. Against Warwickshire we had match points to win the tie but through no fault of our own it was not to be. Losing to eventual Champions Lancashire was no hardship either, considering we played the the match on a show court. A surreal moment for John, winning his doubles match with Justin on the court he had paid to be on to watch the pro event.
Many dicussions speculated about the future of the event at Eastbourne, especially around how to accommodate 44 counties in a meaningful format. We do know there is no shortage of players wanting to represent their County at such a prestiguous event and venue.
Thank you to the team who represented Nottinghamshire with pride and passion.
