Phoenix success at the Road To Wimbledon Finals

Wednesday, August 30, 2017

Phoenix Weir won the boys county Road to Wimbledon event to win his place to play at the All England Club against other county Finals.

All players started matches on Monday 14th August and were put into a box draw with three other players. The top 2 players from each box would then progress to the main draw on Wednesday. Phoenix played really well and won all three matches in two sets meaning he was first in his box.  He then won his next match also in two sets to gain a place in the quarter finals. On Thursday 17th he won his quarter final match and then also played his first two matches in the doubles tournament with Will Cheer (Leicestershire).  They played really well together and progressed to the next round, the semi-finals.  All matches again being won in two sets.

On Friday 18th Phoenix faced a tall 14 year old and fought really hard but was unfortunately knocked out 7-5, 6-4. After a long rain delay, him and Will played the semi final of the doubles and showed some amazing skills against two very experienced players. They won again in two sets.

Thankfully there was no rain delay on finals day.  During the first set, both boys seemed nervous and overwhelmed and went down 6-1.  An easy win thought their opponents.  During the second set, Phoenix really mixed his shots up and the boys fought back winning the second set and then the match tie-break.  It was so exciting and an extremely proud moment.
