FORMER NOTTINGHAM CHAMPION GAJDOSOVA MOVES A STEP CLOSER TO THE AEGON OPEN NOTTINGHAM MAIN DRAW

Jarmila Gajdosova moved to within two wins of a place in the main draw of the Aegon Open Nottingham after easing past Japan’s Misa Eguchi on Saturday. The Australian World No. 53 returned to the centre court where she won the Aegon Nottingham Challenge ITF event last year to continue her fine run in the city, getting past Eguchi 6-1 6-4 is less than an hour. The qualifying draw’s top seed Gajdosova, 28, now takes on Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia on Sunday for one of four spots in the main draw of the first WTA event to be held in Nottingham.

Gajdosova, the Australian Fed Cup star, hopes to emulate her previous run in the East Midlands, having received a wildcard into the Championships, Wimbledon, after claiming singles and doubles crowns at the Aegon Challenge last year. “It was a week to remember for me and gave me confidence for the rest of the year,” she said. “I have good memories here in Nottingham and the matches I’ve played here have helped me. It is a good feeling knowing that you have played so well and have won a lot of matches here. I hope to do the same again.”

Elsewhere, Liverpool teenager and wildcard Sarah Beth Askew went out to China’s Chen Liangin straight sets, while three-time Grand slam semi-finalist Kimiko Date-Krumm beat fellow Japanese player Shuko Aoyama 6-1 6-4 to set up a meeting with Russia’s Alla Kudryavtseva.
