WIMBLEDON REMATCH FOR SPOT IN AEGON OPEN NOTTINGHAM MAIN DRAW

The first day of the Aegon Open Nottingham will see a rematch of last year's second round Wimbledon showdown between  Michelle Larcher de Brito and Jarmila Gajdosova, after both players moved to within one win of the main draw on Sunday.

Top qualifying seed Gajdosova eased past Beatriz Haddad Maia 6-3 6-3 in less than an hour, having broken the Brazilian teenager’s serve three times, while Larcher de Brito, who is seeded sixth in qualifying, downed Olga Savchuk in straight sets, 6-4 7-6(3).

The pair will battle it out for a spot in the main draw at the Nottingham Tennis Centre on Monday, and the winner will face either; first seed and former World No. 2 Agnieszka Radwanska, rising British star Katy Dunne, American Christina McHale or Qiang Wang of China.

De Brito, who overcame Australia's Gajdosova 6-3 4-6 6-3 at the Championships in 2014, is competing for a fifth straight year in Nottingham

“It’s going to be a tough match," De Brito, 22, said. "She plays really well but I just have to go out there and play my best. Hopefully I can do well.”

Three-time Grand Slam semi-finalists Kimiko Date-Krumm, the oldest player on the WTA tour at 44 years old, went out to Russia’s Alla Kudryavtseva in three sets 4-6 7-5 7-5.

Elsewhere, Arantxa Parra Santonja, 32, recovered after dropping the second set to defeat second qualifying seed Lin Zhu 6-1 3-6 7-6(6).

Yuliya Beygelzimer of Ukraine needed a tightly-contested tie-break in the second set to overcome 18-year-old Croatian Donna Vekic 6-3 7-6(7), while former world number 35 Olga Govortsova had no trouble dispatching Kai-Lin Zhang 6-1 6-2.

Monday’s action will also see the start of the tournament’s main draw with Italian fourth seed Karin Knapp taking on Yanina Wickmayer on centre court at 11am.

Home interests are represented by British No. 2 Johanna Konta, a semi-finalist in the Aegon Trophy in Nottingham in 2013, as she faces seventh seed Magdelena Rybarikova
