Essex U16 girls find it tough going in the 12 Counties

Thursday, February 13, 2014

It was a young team at the 12 counties and the girls had some tough fought matches but were unable to defeat Yorkshire and Cambridgeshire.  The first match was against Herts and Worthy Goldman came up against a firing Michaela Brown going down in straight sets.  Caitlyn Hardy playing at No 2 then came from behind to overcome Ameila Camplbell 10-8 in the third set tiebreak.  Katie McGarrigle playing at No 4 found it tough going against an inform opponent and struggled to find her range going down in straight sets.  So all rested on Phoebe Collins who had to resist a fight back from her opponent before coming through in straight sets to level the match at 2 all.

Next up was a strong (and very tall) Yorkshire team and they blasted the girls off the court with their powerful groundstrokes.  Unfortunately none of the girls were able to claim a set but there were a couple of hard fought tiebreaks which almost went our way.

Lastly was Cambridgeshire and their No 1 had injured herself earlier in the day so Worthy was awarded a w/o.  Caitlyn got off to a flying start winning the first set 4-2 only to be clawed back in the 2nd set and lost it 3-5.  The deciding tiebreak started well but then the consistency and accuracy of her opponent Anna Loughlan was eventually too much for Caitlyn.  Phoebe and Katie both tried their best and although the games were close were unable to get under their opponents skin and so the team went down 1-3.

Thanks to the girls for all their efforts and I hope they will all take some positives from their matches and we’ll get them next time!
