Wimbledon wasn't the only place to see great tennis on Saturday; whilst the ladies final was being played over at wimbledon, juniors from across the county and beyond were competing in their very own wimbledon competition at David Lloyd in Southend. 20 juniors in the orange age group were battling it out to see who could take the crown. 16 boys and 4 girls were split into round robin boxes with the top 2 from each group advancing to the quarter finals.
The standard of tennis was particularly high, especially considering the children were playing in the heat of the day. There were some particularly close matches throughout the day with the longest match being won by Hugo Coquelin against last months French Open winner Owen Stanford. After losing the first set 7-3, Hugo came back in the second and third sets to win 7-5, 8-6.
In the girls knock out event Jessica Baxter was unable to repeat her French open success a few weeks ago as she lost to Azra Ozerin in the semi finals. Azra then went on to play Jessica Allen who has beaten DL Southend player Natalie Crawford in the other semi final. After a highly spirited and friendly match, Jessica Allen won 7-2, 7-5.
In the boys event David Lloyd Southend ace, Anthony Weingarten retained the trophy he won last year beating Hugo 7-1, 10-8. Anthony won all four competitions last year and is hoping to repeat his success again this year.
The tournament was enjoyed by all the players and all the matches were played in the best of spirits. The 8&Under red tournament is being played on the 13th July and the 10&Under green event takes place on 21st July.
