You may have seen government adverts and media stories about the Vetting and Barring Scheme (VBS), and about a new organisation called the Independent Safeguarding Authority. The scheme is an important change to the law on using volunteers, employees and contractors to work with children or vulnerable adults. The VBS is designed to offer a higher level of safety, ensuring that risky or dangerous people cannot avoid notice by moving around between jobs or areas.
The scheme will create important new legal responsibilities. The government will provide guidance to support individuals and organisations in meeting these responsibilities. The LTA will also provide a range of services and guidance to ensure that British tennis can use the new scheme effectively and efficiently.
The main part of this scheme comes into effect in July 2010. Most people will not need to do anything before this time.
There is also an important change from 12th October 2009. This will affect people who are currently barred from working with children or vulnerable adults. It will also affect the organisations who are currently working with barred people. More information is included below.
The LTA will provide a service to allow individuals and organisations to comply with the new scheme. Detailed guidance and instructions for British tennis will be circulated in spring 2010. No action is necessary before that time.
