Essex men had a very interesting build up to County Week this year commencing with the 10-2 thrashing of Cambridge University (6 singles and 6 doubles), a very close 5-4 loss to Norfolk at Frinton, a 4-0 win over Hertfordshire at Redbridge (2 pairs only) and the Leo Lyle Championships which were completed last weekend at the Thorpe Bay Lawn Tennis Club.
Youngsters James Caddies and Shamael Chaudhry both played against Cambridge and James played against Norfolk and won an event with Marshall Tutu against first class opposition.
Richard Barham, David Wright, Richard Wire and Mark Klein all played and won against Hertfordshire and Richard Barham was almost unplayable on the final day of the Leo Lyle where aces, volleys and winning backhand returns were abundant and this allowed him and Chris Gardiner the prestigious event that was first competed for 90 years ago in 1924.
I would very much like to thank Thorpe Bay Lawn Tennis Club for allowing the County their courts for both these prestigious competitions, Steve Wynn for a superb job in refereeing the weekend and as ever Graham Ray for all the help he gives me in organisation.
