David Lloyd Gidea Park Tournament

Thursday, September 25, 2014

There was an increase in the entries this year, although, regrettably, no girl’s events were played. The players not only enjoyed the tennis but the superb facilities at the Club.

In the 12 and under event, Tommy Smith (Gidea Park), easily won the event, without dropping a set.

Toby Dunlea (Cranston Park), who had convincingly won the boys 12 and under event last year, this year moved up to the 14 and under event where as No 1 seed had an easy passage to the finals. Here, in a very close match, he beat Matthew Doe (Mountnessing).   Matthew, No 4 seed, beat No 2 seed and higher rated player in the semi-final.

Alex Chao (Harlow LTC) had a comfortable run in the boys 16 and under event, without losing a set. Although the score did not do justice to the match, the final, against James Sammons (Gidea Park) was a close and exciting.

In the Ladies event, home player, Kayte Farrow, won, beating both the No 1 and No 2 seeds, in her unbeaten run.

Harry Melluish (Harlow LTC) won the 18 and under event, had a very close match in the semi-final against Leon Philbert (Langdon City Tennis), where he won in a 3rd set tie break.  In the final, he played No 1 seed, Abdul Admed (Redbridge), who he beat in 2 tight sets.

The Men’s was a 32 draw and the standard of some of the matches was extremely good.   It was won by Jonathan Spencer, No 2 seed, who received a walk over in the final.

The players not only enjoyed the tennis but the superb facilities at the Club.   Our thanks go to Emily De’ath, DLGP General Manager and her staff, who looked after everyone very well.
