David Lloyd Spring Tournament 2013

Wednesday, March 06, 2013

This tournament was played indoors at David Lloyd Basildon during the February half term week.     After last year’s massive entry, it was decided to change the grade to 4, to accommodate the local players, who missed out last year.   The tournament committee were delighted with the entry, standard of play and behaviour.   It was an excellent week’s tennis.

Congratulation go to Harrison Varda (The Connaught Club) on winning his first open tournament.   He beat Matthew Doe (Mountnessing TC), No 2 seed in the semi-final and Joseph Lampon (Grove (Saffron Walden)), No 3 seed in the final, in a very exciting match.

Lewis Tyler (Great Baddow LTC) won the 16 and under boys singles event, beating strong opposition on the way.   He beat Levi Lowe-Lennon in a final, where Lewis played with maturity well beyond his years.   Levi also reached the final of the boys 18 and under event, when he was beaten by the stronger and older Jaime Wright (Billericay LTC).

Pride of place in the girls events must go to Suzanna Glowacz (Garons Tennis Academy) who played well all week and won the 12 and under and 14 and under girls singles, without losing a set.

Adam Groves, from the host club, following his brother’s win in the 10 and under event last year, won the 9 and under event in a very exciting final against David Nana (Redbridge Tennis Club).

In the 8 and under event, local player Oscar Blackwell (Kent Elms TC) easily won his group and then went on to win the final, losing only a handful of games.

The tournament was organised and refereed by Lesley and Ian Pitt.
