Active Essex team raising money to increase take up of disability Sport in Essex in Rio Paralympic year.

Thursday, March 17, 2016

Two members of the Active Essex team (Alexa and Lauren), alongside colleagues from CSP’s across the country, are putting their physical and mental endurance to the test, and taking part in a 300 mile cycle ride from London to Paris on the 2-5th June 2016. Funds raised will be used locally to improve the lives of disabled people in Essex and across the country with other CSP’s taking part, alongside English Federation of Disability Sport, to ensure our project has a national impact too. Currently  72% of disabled people do not take part in sport or physical activity.

Active Essex are committed to helping disabled people of all ages and abilities to access  sporting opportunities. With projects currently in place from grass roots to elite level (Inspired Athletes), we can see the impact that sport and physical activity has.

Role models at elite level play an important part in inspiring take up and participation.  GB athlete Richard Chiassaro , UK number 1 wheel chair 100m & 200m racer, with a qualifying time fast enough for the Rio 2016 Paralympics, has been supported by Active Essex programmes over a number of years. Richard also coaches a community  Basketball club in Harlow.

“Funding is important to help provide access and opportunities in sport, particularly for groups that have traditionally had challenges with access or perceptions that sport is not for them. I’ve been fortunate enough to receive support from a number of groups, including Active Essex, enabling me to work towards my goals of Paralympic success. Sport can change lives, help people’s physical & mental health and wellbeing and form new friendships - whether this is at elite or grass roots level. I want more people with disabilities to see the benefits and take part in activity in Sport and Active Essex can help with this. Good luck to Alexa and Lauren and I thank them for what they are doing to raise funds.”
