TENNIS A SMASH HIT AT ESSEX COUNTY SCHOOL GAMES
Tens of thousands of budding young tennis players are picking up a racket and playing competitive tennis as part of the nationwide Sainsbury’s School Games Level 3 Festivals this month.
There are 46 county festivals taking place across the country over the summer and more than 25,000 primary school pupils are taking part in the schools tennis competitions.
In Essex over 2,000 young people competed across a range of sports including high 5 netball, swimming, mountain biking, quad kids, panathlon, rounders, and tennis, using the inspiration of The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games to transform competitive sport in schools and get more people active.
In the Years 3 & 4 Tennis Final there were 13 teams taking part representing their School Sport Partnership area in Essex. Each team involved 4 boys and 4 girls. Pupils from Dame Bradbury Primary School in Essex were victorious in Mini Tennis Red Final held at David Lloyd Tennis Centre at Basildon.
School representative, from Dame Bradbury Primary School said "On a fantastic day of tennis, our school were crowned Essex champions for the second year in a row. There were 13 schools in the competition and Dame Bradbury won their group, having won five and lost just one of their group games. In a tense semi-final against St Nicholas School from Harlow, we won four, drew two and lost two of the eight matches. This led to the grand final against Bournes Green who we had lost to at the group stage. Every single player gave all they had and we ended up winning by five matches to three”.
Paul Williams, Schools Tennis Manager at the Tennis Foundation added: “School Games Festivals provide a great opportunity for school pupils to pick up a racket, many for the first time, and supports British tennis’ mission of getting more people playing tennis, more often.
“With more than 16,300 schools supported through the Aegon Schools Tennis programme with free teacher training, resources and equipment and 50,000 primary and secondary school pupils playing in schools tennis competitions every year there’s never been a better time to get involved.”
The School Games was created to encourage young people to play more competitive sport in school as part of plans to leave a lasting legacy from the London 2012 Olympics.
Young people taking part in the School Games had the chance to compete in a range of Olympic and Paralympic sports with competitions progressing from school up to national levels.
